This is a new intake system designed to give students quicker access to personal counselling services at Counselling and Development.
All students requesting to have personal counselling will be given a triage appointment. During the first part of the appointment, you will fill in forms needed for your intake and then meet with a triage counsellor for a half hour interview. During this interview, the counsellor will ask you questions related to why you're seeking personal counselling now, what symptoms, if any, you have and what you'd like to accomplish in your personal counselling work.
It is our aim to be able to offer students a triage Appointment as soon as possible after their call to counselling and Development. It may be possible to be seen within the same week, especially if you're flexible in terms of where and when you'd like to be seen for counselling.
No, the counsellor's job is simply to meet with you to assess your counselling needs. S/he will then make a referral for you to a counsellor at SGW or Loyola keeping in mind your needs, the fit with the counsellors on staff and your availability.
Yes, in terms of clarifying for the intake counsellor what you are seeking personal counselling for. However, the primary reason for the triage appointment is to make an assessment of your needs. You will be able to go into greater detail about your problems once you meet with your assigned counsellor.
The waiting time is impacted by several factors; the time of year and the busyness of the counsellors, your expressed needs in your triage appointment and your availability. Your flexibility in terms of which campus you will go to or at what times you can be available for counselling can help tremendously in your securing a follow-up appointment quickly.
No, triage is only for personal counselling. You can still book career or educational counselling appointments as you have done in the past, through the receptionists at either campus.
Your appointment is 45 minutes in total. As part of this time, you are required to complete particular forms which are essential to the triage process before you meet with the triage counsellor. This is absolutely mandatory. Should you be too late to complete the required forms you will have to be rebooked to another day for your intake appointment. There can be no exceptions as we are on a tight schedule for this process.
We ask for your help so that we can see as many students as quickly as possible. To this end, we request that you come to your appointment on time and call at least 24 hours in advance if you can't make your appointment.
Together, our collaborative efforts will benefit all Concordia students seeking personal counselling services.
