Career Counselling

It’s never too early to start planning for your career. Career planning or career counselling is a process of exploring your career goals and objectives, whereby you learn more about yourself and the career options that suit you best. Discover who you are and what career path you would like to follow through the career planning process. At Counselling and Development a Career Counsellor will guide you through self discovery, discuss possible career options and help you to research the career you want. Career counsellors can also assist you in setting up action plans to achieve your career goals.

Below is an example of the step by step process of career planning.

Step 1: Discovery

What skills do you have?
What kind of people do you wish to work with?
What is important to you in a job? (values)
What are your interests?
What is your personality type?

Step 2: Consider Possible Options

Generate a list of all career options that you would love to do.

Step 3: Research Your Options and Narrow Down

Use the list in step 2 to make a research plan. Add columns such as Typical Work Day, Skills and Qualities, Training, Salary, Job Market, to your list. Use online resources or our Career Resource Centre to research each category. Ask yourself questions such as, what does a typical day of work look like for each position? What skills and qualities are required in order to be successful for each option? What is the training involved? Which educational institutions offer these programs? What is the general salary range for these positions? What does the job market look like for each option?

Step 4: Decide on Your Employment Plan

Which of your researched options match your profile most closely? Which options offer you the greatest chance of succeeding?

Step 5: Set Up an Action Plan

This is where we come in! A Career Counsellor will help you set up the action plan that lands you the job of your dreams.
